How to build a start-up

I was reading on Vitamin yesterday - Ryan Carson, of Carsonified and FOWA fame, has posted a video with some simple tips for creating a start up.

His simple tips to try to avoid extra expenditure in those first few months are:

Desk and chair - avoid buying if at all possible. You should have something suitable at home! If you do need a desk or chair to work on, try Ikea.

Computer - yes, I know we all want a Macbook Pro for our new startup business. But we don’t need one do we? Ryan said that his trusty computer lasted him at least the first year, even though it wasn’t the greatest!

Business cards - I’m not sure I agree with him on this, business cards are a silly old-fashioned tool, but still very useful. However he’s spot on with getting Moo cards! They’re so affordable it’s silly not to!

Site and logo - Wordpress is king, of course, as it takes no knowledge to setup and you can even use wordpress.com if you don’t want to pay for hosting.
Personally I’d suggest getting Dreamhost, as it’s affordable and if you’re building a web app, you’ll need a hosting environment to start with.
A great idea if you don’t have the time and money for a designed one is to simply pick a nice font and jazz it up a little. Ryan suggest Veer.com - which I hadn’t heard of until now!

Cash flow sheet - Ryan showed a simple cash flow sheet which can be used to show how quickly you need to start generating revenue. This is simple and easy to understand - and would be a great starting point to get you on your feet

Start-up clinic

Ryan is running a small workshop for start-ups called ’start-up clinic’ - which look to be a really interesting two-day course. I only wish I could afford it!

I’ll be keeping an eye on these and let’s hope that Carsonified puts more on - I may need their advice in the future!
